Taking care of her four daughters, seven-year-old Alexis, five-year-old Callie, four-year-old Lani, and seven-month-old Gabrielle, was what she lived to do and they kept her more than busy. Then Hurricane Katrina hit and the real chaos began.

Chana smartly heeded all warnings, packed up and evacuated the family to North Louisiana, where they would stay at her grandmother's house for five months. The family's next stop was a trailer in Mississippi, which would become the family's place of residence for the next six months. Chana and her family impatiently waited for the day they would be able to return to New Orleans. "I just wanted to be home," she said.

A lifelong resident of the area, Chana cannot think of any other place to call home than the St. Bernard Parish. Departing from their trailer in Mississippi, Chana and her family moved in with her father in Violet. Eventually they were able to rebuild a small portion of their home and currently live in the back part of their house.

Although they have a roof over their head, Chana and her children live without amenities many couldn't imagine going without, including a bathroom and running water. More importantly, she says, she wants her children to have their old rooms back so that they may finally have a place to call their own again.

Chana loves the volunteers who will hopefully be rebuilding her house soon, and "thanks them and appreciates everything they do."
